From the archive, during a lockdown clear-out
When I left PW, then one of the 'Big8'. I did another job before becoming self-employed..  It was fascinating but frustrating.

When I was at PW, I'd attend meetings with senior people at clients like Guinness.  My reports were taken as gospel, and people listened intensely to me as I ran through my findings and recommendations.  I was prepared to make changes when needed, but this was rare.

It was all the more a surprise on changing jobs that people regarded me and what I said with suspicion.  Extreme suspicion in some cases.  Even though it was similar topics.  I had to justify everything I said and build their trust.  Something that people did naturally when I was at PW, and I could take for granted.

The same now applies to this blog.  I need to build credibility and I hope my biography alongside the blog's objectives helps to do that.

I am an Oxbridge science graduate who became a finance professional.  Amongst other things I have  written nearly 100 blog-type articles for my professional institute on a wide range of technical subjects.  Writing about science is in many ways easier, as in most cases I am taking what the experts have provided and simply presenting it in a different way or from a different angle.  It's my profession to take such information, draw conclusions, and make recommendations.  That's what I do in this blog.

So I hope you enjoy this blog, in so far that something that's a matter of life and death can be enjoyed.  At the very least I hope you find the postings enlightening.

CAN THE UK AVOID A SECOND LOCKDOWN BEFORE JUNE 2020?

See larger version below My motto for COVID-19 is “Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst”. This is especially relevant to whether the UK is going to need another lockdown. My assessment as I write on 19 May is that there is at least a 50:50 chance of a lockdown being needed before the end of this May.  But I am hoping I am wrong: The R factor will almost certainly be above a national average of 1 before the end of May, which means COVID-19 will be rising exponentially again.  It has already risen from an estimate in the range of 0-5-0.9 a week ago to 0.7-1 a week later.  Keeping below 1 in the next two weeks seems rather too optimistic. Conversely there will be enormous pressure on the government from their backers and the right-wing press to avoid another lockdown.  Despite the risks of a lockdown and leading to far worse economic damage. ASSESSMENT OF PM JOHNSON'S PRESENTATION 10 May 2020

Last night, Prime Minister Johnson made a televised presentation to the UK public.  The focus was on England, as the devolved administrations in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are responsible for their own NHS and their own lockdown arrangements. GENERAL ASSESSMENT I welcome the general tone of the presentation.  As I hoped in the the previous post , the intention is to ease lockdown as fast as possible but cautiously.  Safety first, otherwise R will rise, infections will soar, and further lockdowns will be necessary.  Economic damage would then be worse than easing lockdown carefully. But as has been widely reported today (Monday), the lack of detail has meant widespread confusion and dismay. What was my initial reaction on PM Johnson's "road map"? WHAT'S NEEDED IN PM JOHNSON'S "ROAD MAP", 10 May 2020

Written Sunday 10 May 2020, before PM Johnson's presentation to the UK. In the previous post, we looked at how the UK has got to where it is with COVID-19 and the tragic count of deaths.  Yet the importance of easing lockdown rapidly but safely. Now let's look to the future.  What needs to be in PM Johnson's "roadmap"? WHAT'S IMPORTANT TO REALISE? What's important going forward?:  Vaccines won't be available to the general public for months, perhaps never. This SARS 2 coronavirus is different from flu, and no vaccine is guaranteed either effective or safe.  Any vaccine needs to be both Medicines and devices are bieng evaluated. Promising progress with medicines already proved effective against other viruses, and which are known to be adequately safe.  But still probably months away against COVID-19 Testing for the virus using swabbing is unreliable, especially for self-swabbing.
